(74.9 × 51.1 × 55.9 cm) GF 40/4 Chair (one of a pair) Designed 1956/64; Made 1964/65 Designed by David Rowland (American, 1924–2010) Manufactured by the General Fireproofing Company (Youngstown Ohio, 1902–1989) Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) agreed to buy the chairs from Rowland, which helped him license the chair to the GF. Launched in 1964, the chairs get their name from the ability to stack 40 chairs in a height of just four feet. At the time, their ability to stack so quickly and compactly was revolutionary.

These chairs were designed as a solution for flexible, stackable seating and executed with a graphic sleekness. 40 chairs can be stacked in a four-foot high space. Designed by David Rowland for GF Office Furniture Systems in 1981, the “40/4” chair is constructed of bent plywood clad in walnut veneer. This piece is in very good vintage condition with a few marks and scratches typical for age and use and one small veneer repair on the back side of the backrest, documented in attached photos.
