They are made of several lobules held together by a fibres. The bulbourethral gland is a small gland approximately the size of a pea that is part of the male reproductive system. Two bulbourethral glands are attached to the urethra and are located behind it with one on each side. Also known as Cowper’s gland in honor of the English surgeon and anatomist William Cowper who provided early descriptions of it, the bulbourethral gland is an exocrine gland. The bulbourethral glands are located in the deep perineal pouch posterolateral to the membranous portion of the male urethra and covered by the external urethral sphincter. Each gland secretes mucus during sexual arousal through individual ducts, 2.5 cm in length, which descend posterolateral and parallel to the membranous urethra through the perineal membrane and corpus spongiosum of the bulb of the penis to enter the floor of the bulbar urethra.
