Thus Emma Bovary was a middle-class woman who could not stand the middle-class life. Synopsis In mid-1800s Normandy, France, farmer's daughter Emma (Mia Wasikowska) leaves the convent where she was educated and marries a young doctor, Charles Bovary (Henry Lloyd-Hughes). In Yonville Emma gives birth to a daughter, Berthe. She is disappointed not to have borne a son, and her sadness persists. During this time romantic feelings develop between Emma and Leon, but as soon as Emma becomes aware of his feelings, she develops a powerful sense of guilt. First, we see that his wife is able to make him walk a tight line. She is easily able to control him even though she possesses none of the "loveliness" of Emma.
